Environmental Impact of Sustainable Asbestos Removal Practices
Luke Gould 19th November 2024
We are committed to sustainable asbestos removal practices, by not only safely and effectively removing asbestos, but also to minimising our environmental impact.
As a hazardous material, asbestos requires careful handling and disposal to avoid harmful impacts on both people and the planet. Here are some of the ways we ensure that our operations are environmentally friendly:
Responsible Waste Management and Disposal
Certified Disposal Sites: All asbestos waste is transported to certified disposal facilities that meet stringent environmental regulations, ensuring that asbestos is safely contained without contaminating surrounding ecosystems.
Sealed Containment: Asbestos materials are meticulously sealed and labelled in compliance with environmental safety standards. This is to prevent fibres from escaping during transit or disposal, reducing potential environmental contamination.
Any wastewater produced within our decontamination units is also filtered through a high efficiency filter (specification less than 5 microns), before we dispose of it through foul drains.
Minimising Waste Production
Selective Removal Techniques: Instead of removing large sections of materials, our team employs selective removal when possible, carefully removing only the contaminated areas. This reduces the volume of waste generated, conserving resources and reducing the burden on disposal facilities.
Recycling and Reusing Non-Contaminated Materials: Any building materials not contaminated by asbestos are salvaged and either recycled or reused, helping reduce landfill waste.
Eco-Friendly Equipment and Supplies
Low-Emission Vehicles and Equipment: Our fleet and equipment are chosen for their low-emission outputs to reduce our carbon footprint. By using fuel-efficient and electric-powered machinery, we minimise the greenhouse gases released during our work.
Non-Toxic Cleaners and Sealants: During and after asbestos removal, we use non-toxic cleaning agents and sealants. This prevents harmful chemicals from seeping into the environment and reduces the impact on air quality.
Energy-Efficient Work Practices
Efficient Scheduling and Route Planning: To reduce fuel usage, our team optimises travel routes and schedules to avoid unnecessary trips and minimise idle time, leading to lower emissions overall.
Minimal Water Usage: During abatement, we use advanced methods to minimise water usage. When water is needed to suppress dust, we employ controlled application to avoid excess usage and reduce runoff.
Continuous Training in Environmental Standards
Employee Education: Our staff are trained not only in safe asbestos handling but also in sustainable practices. This empowers every team member to work with an environmental mindset.
Up-to-Date Compliance: We stay updated on the latest environmental regulations and advancements in sustainable practices, ensuring that our procedures are both effective and eco-conscious.
We’ve built sustainable practices into every aspect of our asbestos removal process. We reduce waste, conserve sources, and minimise emissions to deliver an environmentally responsible service.
